Disgrasian: “Meet The First Asian American Gold Medalist, 91 Year-Old Sammy Lee”

The last time the Olympics were in London in 1948 was also the first time an Asian American won a gold medal in the Games. That distinction belongs to 91 year-old Dr. Samuel “Sammy” Lee, who was born in Fresno, CA and is of Korean descent.

He won in diving, for those who are interested in such details. It’s worth noting because diving involves jumping into a swimming pool, and swimming pools, as we all know, have a history with racism in the US. From wikipedia:

As a twelve-year-old in 1932, Lee dreamed of becoming a diver, but at the time Latinos, Asians and African-Americans were only allowed to use Fresno’s Brookside Pool on Wednesdays, on what was called “international day”: the day before the pool was scheduled to be drained and refilled with clean water. Because Lee needed a place to practice and could not regularly use the public pool, his coach dug a pit in his backyard and filled it with sand. Lee practiced by jumping into the pit.

So this guy won an Olympic gold medal after learning to dive while jumping into a fucking sand pit in someone’s backyard because white people wouldn’t allow him to train in a regular swimming pool.

Flashmob of the Day: A flashmob invaded a Copenhagen, Denmark Metro train last month, but in this case, the flashmob was the Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra.

They treated unsuspecting commuters to a performance of Grieg’s “Peer Gynt,” and creative agency Makropol captured the whole thing on video.

Right about now, a few people on that train are probably wishing they had taken their earbuds out.

[22words.]

More orchestra flashmobs! This video is lovely. And Morning (the bit of Peer Gynt featured here) is one of the most beautiful pieces ever.

That gave me chills. Beautiful! (Although I can’t imagine how difficult it must be to play like that on a moving, crowded train. Maybe the trains are better in Denmark.)

Guy From Rent – I’m starting to think that maybe Santa Fe was more of a metaphor than a place.

Guy From Newsies – What’s a “metaphor”?

Guy From Rent – It’s…what did you think about, when you thought about Santa Fe? Had you researched business opportunities, or brunch places that take reservations?

Official “Avengers” Cinematic Timeline
(Click through for a larger image)
Marvel unveiled its official timeline of events for its Avengers-related films. It models the timeline after Christianity’s calendar replacing Jesus at the center with Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man. Where as Christian calendars are broken up into B.C and A.D (Before Christ and Anno Domini) this Avengers timeline is broken up into BIM and AIM (Before Iron Man and After Iron Man).
The timeline chronicles all of the events depicted in the six films from starting with the Jotunehim invasion of Midgard/Earth all the way up to when Avengers assemble.
Of note is the exclusion of Aang Lee’s Hulk clarifying for fans whether or not Louis Letterier’s The Incredible Hulk was a direct sequel or not.
